died shortly after returning from Civil War. Deed records at Malvern, Hot Spring Co., AR show that Matthew bought land from Enock Lockett in 1861. This land lies about 1/2 mile north and across the south fork of the Saline River from where his brother Sam bought land in 1866. from Patti Vance Hays

Patti Vance Hays contributed this information; Edward & Sarah moved sometime in the early 1850's to the Glazypeau Creek/River and by the Military Road from Little rock. From USA patent 17985 - USA to Edward Brown 80/100 acres. this area was Hot Springs co in 1850, Montgomery Co., in 1860, Garland Co. in 1880. this area is about 2 miles south of where the MT Valley Springs are now located. They were there during the Civil War and the remainder of their lives. They died about 1885 - 1887. Mr. L. Stephens believes they are buried with their three daughters, Susan, Mary and Margaret. Either at Rockdale Cem or Oak Hill Cem. Both Cem are near where the families first settled.

Patti Vance Hays notes: Crawford's 1st/10th AR Cavalry - Sgt - not listed on muster roll; Fed records list him as sgt in Co G 10 AR Cavalry; captured at Pilot Knob, MO 9/27/1864; confined at US Military Prison, Alton, Illinois. Exchanged at City Point, VA. The Record (Garland co., Historical Society newsletter) shows he served in the Civil War and was wounded. He did not return home from the war until three years after being wounded with a broken leg. which did not heal and he had to walk to get home. In addition the Record States: by Mrs. Mary Lee Fletcher Malloy: He took his two small daughers and joined a wagon train headed for California. When the train was going through Colorado, a tribe of Indians approached the train and wanted to take nancy. Sam became frightened and during the dark of night, slipped away with his family and came all the way back to arkansas alone. In 1850 he and his two daughers are listed in the census. (that census included his mother Jane and brother Matthew) He was adescribed as a large man with tremendous strength. He married again and had one son and his second wife also died. Sam died in the 1870's from an overdose of Calama. He was ill and a teaspoon of Calama was supposed to help. He said, "If a man was supposed to take a teaspoon, then a man his size needed at least 3 or 4 teaspoons."

Arthur Madison Wallace is descended from Robert Wallace in Daviess Co., IN. Several of his siblings married in Daviess Co., IN. Sister Violet Jane married Benjamin Brown son of John Brown who died in the War of 1812. Sister Rachael married Francis/Frank Peterson in 1826. Brother Charles married Lavina Peterson in 1826.

All descendants reported here came from Katrina Johnson Oct 2003.

Both George W. Brown and Harvey N. Brown families believed his middle initial was P or T. But a newspaper article in 1923 of his families reunion gave his name as J. B. Brown.

George Washington Brown family (from a bible that can not be found today)has this date listed for birth and lists 15 Nov. 1887 as death date also. But no proof on either dates.

James Harvey Brown Obit said he was born in Arkansas July 27, 1851. He crossed the plains in 1852 and settled in San Joaquin County, where he grew to manhood. He was married on December 5, 1878, to Matilda Cozens of Stockton, who passed beyond on November 12, 1909. To this union were born seven children, who are now living. The deceased had resided in roseville since the death of his wife; but two months ago he returned to Stockton. He is survived by three brothers and one sister at Stockton, and the following children: Harvey N. Brown, Elmer L. Brown, Mrs. Alice E. Lovejoy, mrs. Josie M. Sanders, all of Roseville; Louis H. Brown of Los Angeles, Col. Henry H. Brown, Mrs. Mildred M. Torres.

J. P. Brown was listed as 64 when he died. I believe this to be our James P. Brown who died prior to the June 7, 1880 census. He would have been 64 in 1880. However I think he died in or near French Camp Hospital and buried there and reburied in the Stocton Rural cemetery in 1887. George Washington Brown descendants believe him to have died in 1887 but why then did Kizziah list herself as a widow on the 1880 census.
