Brown/Browne/Braun DNA Study: Summary List of Relationship Groups

We believe it's more likely than not that the members of each relationship group below (Groups No. 1 through No. 119) share common Brown ancestors with their fellow group members inside a "genealogical" time frame, that is, approximately since the widespread introduction of surnames in western Europe during the 15th century.

These groupings are strictly tentative, however, and they will necessarily be revised from time to time. What's more, the identification of specific common ancestors for any group will generally depend more upon conventional "paper" genealogy than upon additional DNA testing.

Color coding for Haplogroups:

Green = haplogroup proven by independent SNP test
Red = haplogroup inferred from STR's with high confidence (no SNP test)
Blue = haplogroup inferred from STR's with medium to low confidence (no SNP test)
Black = haplogroup presented with unknown confidence (SNP status not known)

5292 Connell J. Brown    such haplogroups were introduced to Britain by Roman soldiers pre-300 A.D. Such theories also may be relevant for Groups

68300 Cecil Henry Ramsey    Note 1:  No. 11795 has been included tentatively in Group No. 10,  in spite of the fact that he's four genetic steps away from his nearest partial match among other members of this group.  There are three reasons for this decision: (1) The families of no. 11795 and no. 2228 have both strong "paper" evidence and a persuasive oral tradition of common Brown ancestry; (2) no. 11795 and the other members of this Group are all closer to one another than they are to any other project participants; and (3) all members of this Group have either zero or very few "non-surname" matches -- a circumstance under which the probability of false positive matches is very low. For a similar "violation" of the conventional relationship criteria, see Group No. 71 below. As for nos. 3909 and 68300, their earliest known Ramsey ancestor was an orphan of unknown parentage, who now is thought to have been a "biological Brown."

See the discussion under Group No. 20. It's virtually certain for Group No. 18, moreover, that at least some members would need to be transferred to other Groups or to our "Unique Haplotypes" category if we had values on markers 13 thru 37 for the anonymous man.

Modal Haplogroup    Note 1: The men in Group No. 20 have a DNA signature called the "Atlantic Modal Haplotype"  (AMH).  This signature is the most frequent yDNA pattern for western Europe.  As such, this set of marker values is especially prone to generate "false positive" matches.  An important outcome is that men in Group No. 20 are less likely than the men in our non-AMH groups to be related to one another within a "genealogical"  time frame, that is, since about 1400 A. D.  In particular,  men with values equal or close to the AMH seldom can rely on the results of a 12-marker DNA match for evidence of a genealogical relationship. Even perfect 25-marker matches for men in the AMH category sometimes break down upon upgrading to 37 markers. Ditto for men within one step of the AMH, like our Groups No. 5, 15, 18, and 59.  Nonetheless,  for all such groups that are close to the AMH we have included men tested only for 12 markers --  rather than run the risk of missing a relationship that might eventually turn out to be significant.
