Brown DNA
Project- Haplogroups and Ysearch
|
|
|
|
|
The ySearch database is a feature offered by our contractor, Family Tree DNA. It allows
participants to compare results not only with FTDNA customers outside our project, but also
with men who have tested via other companies. Participation is entirely voluntary, and project members may upload their
results directly from their personal pages at the FTDNA
website. For questions or assistance, please contact our project co-administrator, Jim Brown, at
DNAforBrowns@aol.com. |

The haplogroup is a "deep ancestral" indicator, which
shows were a the "male line" ancestors may have lived thousands of years ago. It should never be confused with
the haplotype, which is merely another term for a man's yDNA profile.
For most men in our project, the haplogroups have in fact been
inferred (or to use FTDNA's terminology, "predicted") on the basis of
their haplotypes. These estimates are generally believed to be accurate in more than 95% of the cases. But a
few of our members have also had the separate SNP test, which is the "gold standard" for haplogroup
determination.
About two-thirds of the men in our Brown/Browne/Braun project are estimated to be members of haplogroup
R1b -- far and away the most common haplogroup in western Europe. For specific information on the likely
geographic "home" of his haplogroup, any member may refer to his personal page at the FTDNA website.
